What is the Job Like?
Most mechanical engineers work in offices, but depending on the job, they can also visit worksites, which might include oil platforms or skyscrapers. Many engineers have a 9-to-5 schedule, which makes for a nice work-life balance, but about 1 in 3 mechanical engineers worked overtime in 2012. It's an exciting field partly because of all the changes, Seering says, adding that sustainable designs are now a major focus. "We're running out of things, " he says. "We can’t keep using energy and materials the way we used to."
